Chapter 11

Your device

Which model you have, what it can do, and what this manual covers.

Your firmware version is on the device under Settings, then System. If it starts with a number other than 2, fetch the manual for your version from the website rather than relying on this one.

Finding the manual for your version#

Coming — not built yet, on either end

The plan is a QR code on the device, readable without unlocking anything, that opens vault.bendflex.in/manual already carrying your hardware revision and firmware version — so you land on the exact manual for what your unit actually runs, not this printed snapshot. Two things have to exist before that is real: the device does not show this QR today, and the page it would open does not exist yet either. Until both do, use the table above and the version line in Chapter 09 to check by hand.

What that QR will and will not carry, once it exists: your hardware revision and firmware version, and nothing else — not your serial number, not a fingerprint of your recovery wordlist or your key-derivation settings, nothing about what's stored on the device. It only ever needs to know what your unit runs, never which unit it is, so a link you scan in a repair shop or paste into an email can never double as a way to track one specific vault.

The models#

ModelStorageRoughlyEverything else
Vault PasswordsNonePasswords, codes and notesIdentical. Same processor, same screen, same security, same features, same updates.
Vault 44 GB card~800 scanned pages
Vault 88 GB card~1,600 pages
Vault 1616 GB card~3,200 pages
Vault 3232 GB card~6,500 pages
Vault 6464 GB card~13,000 pages
The card is not the vault

Your passwords, codes, notes and settings live in the device itself. The card holds documents only. So the Passwords model does everything in this manual except store files, and a failed or missing card never costs you a password.

One column works today, and it works everywhere. That is the short version of this table: whatever you own, you reach the Vault by joining its own Wi-Fi and opening a browser. Nothing to install, and no adapter for iPhone. The other two columns are what we are building — Chapter 02 describes them.

The last row is a judgement rather than a limitation. You can join a borrowed laptop to the Vault's Wi-Fi and open the portal, but until the Vault can type a password for you without showing it, opening your whole vault in somebody else's browser is not a good trade.

Your serial number#

Every device has one, in the form VG-A32DF-99L4. It appears on the device screen, on the identity slip in your box, and under Settings. You will want it when contacting us, when registering at vault.bendflex.in, and — as Chapter 01 suggests — written alongside your recovery words, so whoever finds them knows what they open.
